Advanced Search: National Register Listings

WHAT ARE NOMINATIONS?

The National Register of Historic Places is a federal program that incentivizes, but does not guarantee, the preservation of historic properties. The program is administered by the National Park Service and coordinated by each state’s SHPO. A nomination is the form used to list a property or district in the National Register. SCHPR also includes nominations for National Historic Landmarks (NHLs), as all properties designated as NHLs are automatically listed in the National Register.

Search Tips

  • Most National Register data is mapped in SC ArchSite. Use the Public View Map to search by current address and identify if the property may be recorded in SCHPR under another name, address, or as part of a historic district.
  • Nominations for properties that have been removed from the National Register remain available on SCHPR. Select “Removed from National Register” in the National Register Determination field to search removed properties.
  • Many older nominations were digitized without their accompanying maps. The majority of these maps are available in records held by the National Archives (NARA) or the NPGallery. Use the National Park Service’s online National Register Database to locate and access these records.
  • Keyword search will search the readable text of both landing pages and digitized documents.
  • Use the keyword search to find properties within National Register historic districts by address. Note that not all nominations contain inventories.
  • You may input data in multiple fields at once to narrow your search.
  • If you are searching for a specific phrase, such as high school, put that phrase within double quotation marks (“high school”).
  • Data in these records may use abbreviations (Rd. for Road, N for North), initials (W.W. Fennell for William Wallace Fennell), or nicknames (Will or Willie for William). Names may also be written last name, first name (Wallace, William).
  • You may manually input a year or range of years (2016 or 2016-2026) in Date Listed to see all nominations listed in that year or date range.
  • When searching a range of years, do not put spaces between hyphens if you want any result that includes any portion of the range. If you only want results with years that include the entire range, then put spaces between hyphens. For example, searching “1865-1900” for Period of Significance will return any listing significant in any year between 1865 and 1900, but searching “1865 – 1900” will only include listings that were significant for all the years between 1865 and 1900.
