Description and Narrative:
The Eau Claire Municipal Complex consists of the 1941 Eau Claire Town Hall and the neighboring 1949 Eau Claire Post Office. Both buildings are one story at the front and two stories at the rear, and are of concrete construction with brick veneers. The façade of the town hall is characterized by its Art Moderne design, featuring recessed brick courses and a curved front-door awning. Historically, the front façade featured two garage bays for fire trucks. The post office is a simple building with a central front entrance flanked by large plate-glass windows (one now infilled) and a regular fenestration pattern of large multi-light windows along the side elevations. The two buildings were connected by a hyphen c. 1967. The complex served as the governmental center for the former Town of Eau Claire from 1941 to 1955. Eau Claire was established in 1899 as a northern suburb of Columbia. The town hall building housed the town’s fire department, police station, and city council offices. The construction of the adjacent post office in 1949 marked the completion of a major goal of mid-century town boosters. As the central location for Eau Claire residents to receive vital public services, the Eau Claire Municipal Complex has important associations with long-running local debates over annexation to neighboring Columbia. While annexation supporters pushed for access to Columbia’s more substantial public infrastructure, leaders within the Town of Eau Claire and other boosters touted the services provided at the Eau Claire Municipal Complex as part of their push to remain an independent municipality. Eau Claire was finally annexed into Columbia in 1955 and the town government dissolved. Listed in the National Register February 5, 2026.
