Description and Narrative:
Gallman High School operated as the only public high school for Black students in Newberry County during segregation. Architect Irvine B. Leslie Jr. designed the International Style school, which was constructed in 1954 as part of the state's equalization program. The school consists of the original 1954 building and a two-story addition erected in 1959. The school's architectural austerity and material composition embody prevailing post-World War II building design predicated on efficiency and durability, and typify the architectural design trends of South Carolina's equalization school program. The equalization program sought to avoid integration by constructing physically equal white and Black school plants. The school is significant for its associations with the equalization program and for its Modern architecture, as well as for its importance to the history of local Black education. Gallman High School is also significant as a site of student activism during the local civil rights struggle in 1968 and 1969. Gallman became an integrated middle school in 1970.
