Description and Narrative:
Bracknell's Store Complex is a collection of adjacent and historically related commercial buildings prominently situated on the corner of S. Depot Street and Edgefield Street in the small town of Plum Branch. The complex was built in three installments. The Bracknell family constructed a two-story corner building in 1910 to house their general store, J.W. Bracknell & Son, at 101 S. Depot Street. They sold a wide array of items for the home and farm. The Bank of Plum Branch constructed an adjacent one-story building in 1911-1912 at 103 S. Depot Street. The bank building was absorbed into the store complex after the bank closed c. 1927. Both early 20th century buildings feature brick masonry construction, segmented arched windows, parapets decorated with corbelled brickwork at the cornice level, and visible chimneys. The J.W. Bracknell & Son building features a prominent original painted sign on the north elevation and a 1964 metal sign atop its parapet (relocated from the rooflines of 103 and 105 S. Depot Street). The footprint of the complex doubled in 1964 with the construction of a one-story brick masonry building at 105 S. Depot Street for Bracknell’s Supermarket and Hardware, Feed & Seed. The continued growth of the store complex in this period reflects changes in commercial shopping trends in the local area, as it evolved from an early 20th century general store into a mid-century one-stop shopping center. Bracknell’s Store Complex served as the major commercial enterprise in the rural area in and around Plum Branch for most of the 20th century. The complex served the local population, most of whom were farmers, and attracted customers from as far away as Edgefield to the east and Lincoln County in Georgia to the west, creating a commercial and financial hub that was significant in the development of the Plum Branch community and the surrounding area in this agriculture-rich region of western South Carolina. Bracknell's remained a bustling, diversified commercial staple of regional community life through most of the 1970s, closing in 1987. Listed in the National Register January 7, 2026.
