Description and Narrative:
The Professional Building is an excellent and intact example of International Style commercial architecture in Cayce. It is a one-story brick masonry office building constructed over three construction episodes in 1958, 1962, and 1966. Pink and yellow variegated brick clads the exterior. The building features an L-shaped plan with a flat concrete roof. The exterior walls are pierced by banks of windows, each composed of a direct set window over a hopper, with solid panels above and below. The building’s design emphasizes low, horizontal massing and minimalist detailing. Located along Knox Abbott Drive, the main commercial artery of Cayce, the building is partially surrounded by a paved parking lot. The eastern 1966 addition steps up to accommodate the topography of the site, which slopes slightly from west to east. The 1966 addition also features built-in brick planters. The Professional Building exhibits principles of International Style architecture through its flat roof, horizontal massing, large banks of windows, and lack of ornamentation. As part of an expansion planned from the development of the original design, two subsequent matching additions were added to the original building in 1962 and 1966. These later additions retained the International Style design elements of the original building, and its westward expansion reinforced its long, horizontal massing.
