Description and Narrative:
The Church of the Heavenly Rest is a front-gabled, wood frame building constructed in the Carpenter Gothic style in 1891. It sits in a remote section of western Hampton County off a small, county road approximately six miles southwest of of Estill. The building is clad in board and batten siding and features a diamond-patterned roof of either asphalt or asbestos shingles. The main building rests on a brick foundation and features nine pointed-arch, stained-glass windows, plus a small, stained-glass, rose window over the front-gabled entry porch. The sanctuary interior is clad in vertical wood beadboard and features a series of open scissors trusses. A fellowship hall of similar exterior construction was added to the rear of the original church building in 1975. The church is significant as an outstanding and exceedingly rare example of intact Carpenter Gothic architecture in the Estill vicinity and western Hampton County. The church retains its original design elements, including the Art Nouveau-influenced stained glass windows. Listed in the National Register January 14, 2026.
