Description and Narrative:
Hebron Presbyterian Church is a late-nineteenth-century church located on Johns Island. Situated in a predominantly rural area, the c. 1885 church is flanked by two associated cemeteries to the north and west. Hebron Presbyterian Church retains its original overall form, Gothic-style detailing, and important interior spaces, such as the historic sanctuary and interior gallery. The wood-frame two-story building sits on a replacement concrete block foundation. Significant damage from Hurricane Hugo in 1989 eventually led to the relocation of the church approximately twenty feet north of its original site. The church is locally significant for its associations with the establishment and construction of Black churches as vital community institutions for formerly enslaved people in the late nineteenth century. Hebron Presbyterian is one of two surviving Black churches on Johns Island from this period and is an important surviving representation of institution-building by local Black residents following the Civil War and emancipation. The church is also a rare extant example of late-nineteenth-century ecclesiastical architecture on Johns Island. Listed in the National Register April 28, 2025.
