Description and Narrative:
The Hampshire Mill is comprised of a textile mill and mill office on over ten acres along South Main Street (U.S. Hwy-321), the primary thoroughfare of downtown Clover. The mill sits about one-half-mile southwest of the downtown core. South of the mill is the former location of the 1916 Hawthorne Mill, which no longer stands. The Hampshire Mill is a four-story steel and concrete frame textile mill constructed in two phases in 1923 and 1951. The mill is an example of a daylight factory, an industrial building type characterized by steel reinforced concrete framing with large window spans to provide daylight to the interior. The two-story brick office building, constructed in 1923, sits south of the mill. Designed by J.E. Sirrine & Co., the mill is significant as a rare, early, and intact representation of the textile industry in Clover. While several textile facilities were later constructed in Clover, Hampshire is the only extant property that pre-dates World War II. As the mill changed hands and grew, a four-story addition was built at the north end of the building in 1951. The mill is also significant as the only extant example of daylight factory architecture in the town of Clover. Hampshire Mill continued to be a major part of industry in Clover until its closure in 1985. Listed in the National Register May 18, 2026.
