Description and Narrative:
Startex Finishing Company is listed in the National Register for its industrial and economic significance to Startex, an unincorporated community in Spartanburg County. Startex Finishing Company originated in 1895 as the Tucapau textile mill. The company and the surrounding mill village both assumed the Startex name in 1936 with the mill's purchase by Spartan Mills chief executive Walter S. Montgomery. Startex Finishing Company subsequently operated for sixty-two years as a division of Spartan Mills and throughout that time was the principal industry and employer for residents of the broader Startex community. Its period of significance therefore begins with the founding of Tucapau Mill in 1895 and ends in 1973, which marks fifty years from the time of listing. Despite the loss of the mill complex's spinning and weaving buildings, its original industrial character is still conveyed by a number of other surviving resources, including the bleachery, company store and office, and post office buildings, as well as two surviving water tanks, two smokestacks, and a truss bridge. Listed in the National Register March 7, 2023.
