Description and Narrative:

The Richland County Health Center is a former government building located in downtown Columbia. Constructed in 1959-1960, it features a modified rectangular plan with a courtyard at its center, created when a 1966 addition enclosed the rear lawn. The building is primarily one-story, with a double-height auditorium at the northeast corner and a two-story section at the rear in the building's southwest corner. The exterior features a salmon-colored brick veneer laid in a running bond and vertical banks of anodized aluminum windows. The two-over-two horizontal muntin windows are framed by colored enamel panels above and below. The Richland County Health Center was funded by the Hill-Burton Act, which provided federal funding to local governments for the construction of modern, up-to-date health centers and hospitals beginning in the post-war period. The building replaced a small, outdated clinic on Lady Street, providing larger, more modern space for public health programs. Designed by local architecture firm Lafaye, Fair, Lafaye and Associates, the building’s International Style design signified modernity and efficiency. The building is significant as Richland County’s primary public health center from 1960 until 1976. Listed in the National Register September 24, 2025.
