Description and Narrative:
The U.S. Post Office and Courthouse, constructed in 1937, is significant as an example of a federal government building in Greenville erected under the New Deal-era Public Works Administration to relieve the economic problems caused by the Depression. The erection of the building was perceived as a symbol of community pride and achievement and as a representation of the federal presence in Greenville. The building is also architecturally significant as a notable example of the Simplified Classical architectural style, the preferred style of Supervising Architect Louis A. Simon. Simon employed consulting architect Eric Kebbon to design the new three-story federal building which would house Greenville's U.S. Courthouse and Post Office as well as other federal offices. The emphatic signage, pilasters, and monumental scale of the portico, windows, and doors convey the building's public purpose while simultaneously emphasizing the modernity and economy of Depression-era federal government through the lack of extraneous and ornamental detail. The building was designated as the Clement F. Haynesworth, Jr. Federal Building in 1982, in honor of Clement Furman Haynesworth, Jr., a Greenville native and federal judge from 1957-1989.
