Description and Narrative:
Wehaken is a 67-acre property in the West Ashley area of Charleston County. Charles and Emily Ravenel constructed the main house (1915) and caretaker’s house (1917) on the property, both in the Colonial Revival style. Both houses are one-story in height with partially raised basement levels. They share several Colonial Revival organizational and design elements, including symmetrical façades under disengaged porches, flared brick staircases leading to the entries, and nearly symmetrical chimneys. The houses have decorative elements such as louvered shutters with wrought iron shutter dogs, columnar or chamfered porch supports, and traditional doorway surrounds. Both houses have hipped roofs, front porches, weatherboard siding, and raised brick pier foundations. The main house features a central hallway interior plan. Several elements of design and massing, including the raised basements, full façade porches, and low-pitched hipped roofs, reference historic architectural precedent in the Charleston area, which has a rich Georgian, Adamesque, and Classical Revival tradition shaped by environmental conditions such as the warm climate and high water table. The historic setting includes the allée and several associated brick structures built at the same time as the two residences. The two houses are significant as excellent and intact representations of Colonial Revival farmhouses in the West Ashley area of Charleston. Listed in the National Register January 16, 2026.
