Description and Narrative:
Lady's Island Bridge, now the Richard V. Woods Memorial Bridge, was completed in 1959 as one of the last swing bridges constructed in South Carolina. It is listed in the National Register for its significance to engineering, as it is a rare surviving example of the swing bridge typology in South Carolina. The structure is a Pratt through-truss swing bridge which spans the Beaufort River over the Intracoastal Waterway between downtown Beaufort and Lady's Island and is part of U.S. Highway 21-Business. The bridge runs from Carteret Street in Beaufort to the north to the Sea Island Parkway on Lady's Island to the south. The bridge is sited north-to-south and is comprised of four distinct elements: a swing span with operator's building, a road deck, approaches, and the substructure. The bridge is one of only two swing bridges still in operation in Beaufort County.
