The earthenwork is overgrown with trees and partially obscured by landscaping from the adjacent fast food restaurant. The site of the former battery is overgrown. The entire property has been compromised by recent development on and adjacent to the site.
Historical Information:
The earthenwork was constructed by federal forces during the occupation of Beaufort during the Civil War. Built in 1862 as Fort Saxton, this site was one of several installations shown on a period map of area defenses and was intended to prevent invasion
