Historical Information:
Built by Henry Middleton of Charleston as summer house in 1813 on a tract purchase from Elias T. Earle. Middleton, son of a prominent family, was himself president of Continental Congress, US Senator, SC legislator, governor of SC, and Minister to Russia. Middleton was owner of Middleton Gardens in Charleston. George Washington Earle, son of Col. Earle, purchased house in 1820.
