Description and Narrative:
Fort Mill Manufacturing Company Mill No. 2 is a large textile mill complex. It is the only extant historic textile mill in Fort Mill. Built in 1892 and operated by a succession of different firms over its first decade, the mill’s operations finally stabilized with its 1901 acquisition by the Fort Mill Manufacturing Company. The company already operated another local textile plant, leading this property to be known as Fort Mill Manufacturing Company Mill No. 2. Under the eventual ownership of Springs Cotton Mills, it also later became known as the “White Plant” in honor of the manufacturing company’s first president, Samuel E. White. From its inception and continuing for decades, Mill No. 2 was one of Fort Mill’s most important sites of industrial productivity and employment, rivaled only by the company’s Mill No. 1, which no longer stands. The mill’s production and overall significance to Fort Mill’s local industrial economy continued to grow with multiple expansions of space for manufacturing and other company work throughout the 20th century. The main mill building encompasses a long, rectangular, one-story-on-basement 1892 factory and a series of one-story brick, concrete, and steel manufacturing, storage, and equipment room additions. The two-story 1904 addition at the 1892 mill’s north end and the 1916 weaving room addition to the north more than doubled the plant’s square footage. Subsequent historic expansions occurred in 1937, 1960, 1966, and 1973. The complex also includes a small, one-story office constructed c. 1940. Listed in the National Register May 19, 2025.
