Description and Narrative:
The Bob Russell Realty Building, constructed in 1967 with two additions in 1972 and 1985, is listed under Architecture as a significant local example of New Formalist commercial architecture in Columbia, South Carolina. Located at the corner of Assembly and Calhoun streets in downtown Columbia, the building is prominently situated along a commercial corridor and exemplifies New Formalist design applied to a small-scale commercial property. The building’s style is defined by its monumental rectangular massing, an emphasis on the building’s structural grid, a highly stylized travertine entablature, symmetrical façade, and the use of pilasters. While Modern architecture abounds in Columbia, commercial examples of New Formalism are less common, and the Bob Russell Realty Building represents one of the best local examples of the style applied to a commercial property. The building retains historic integrity from the period of significance through the retention of its exterior character-defining features and successfully conveys its historic New Formalist design. The building’s period of significance, 1967 and 1972, encompasses the construction of the building and its first, more cohesive addition. Listed in the National Register December 30, 2024.
