Description and Narrative:
Situated on a 12.55-acre campus, Edgewood School is comprised of the original equalization school built in 1956 and a one-story, two-room, science wing addition built in 1993. The original building, designed by architect John M. Lambert, Jr., typifies equalization school architecture that incorporated modern, efficient, building materials like masonry, cast concrete, steel, and glass into a style that emphasized horizontality and austerity of ornamentation. Edgewood School is locally significant as the only public school for Black students in Ninety Six from its construction in 1956 through its transition into an integrated middle school in 1970. Edgewood School is also significant as the only school in Ninety Six with a clearly documented connection to the state’s mid-century school equalization program, a massive statewide building campaign aimed at “equalizing” white and Black schools in order to thwart legal challenges to segregation. The school is also locally significant for its architecture as an especially intact example of the Modern design influences that characterized the equalization program.
