Description and Narrative:
The Gray Court Downtown Historic District occupies the area where the town’s commercial center first developed in the late 1880s with the construction of the Greenville & Laurens Railroad in 1886. The district boundary encompasses eighteen resources, which are mostly single- and two-story commercial buildings constructed between c. 1908 and 1978. Most of the buildings from W. Main Street and originated from the early economic development spurred by the railroad between 1908 and 1920. The town experienced multiple fires between 1912 and 1950, which necessitated the reconstruction of several buildings. Institutional improvements in the 1960s brought a new town hall and post office, located at opposite ends of W. Main Street’s commercial strip. The contributing buildings are traditional expressions of early- and mid-20th century vernacular commercial architecture, aside from the Modern post office building. Most of the buildings align with the sidewalk, and brick was the common material choice for construction. Behind the row of commercial buildings are several single-story, wood-frame, metal-clad warehouses. The district is significant for its role in the commercial development of the town of Gray Court during the 20th century. From its founding, the town’s commercial center was located along the nominated stretch of W. Main Street, where a variety of retail, financial, and agricultural enterprises operated over the succeeding decades. The buildings represent the commercial history of Gray Court through most of the 20th century. A large number of the buildings were constructed for local enterprises in the early twentieth century, many of which remained in business well into the mid to late 20th century, and a few into the 21st century. The district also encompasses resources associated with a second period of local economic growth and development during the 1960s and early 1970s. Listed in the National Register October 8, 2024.
