Description and Narrative:
Spring Street Methodist Church is individually listed at the local level under Architecture as an excellent example of late antebellum Neoclassical ecclesiastical architecture in Charleston. Designed by the Charleston firm of Barbot & Seyle in 1856, the Spring Street Methodist Church was the last major Neoclassical church in antebellum Charleston, and it exemplifies a monumental religious building reminiscent of an ancient Roman temple. The church’s massing, columned portico, white stucco finish, and overall monumentality create an imposing building. The building’s period of significance encompasses its initial construction date in 1856 through its dedication in 1858. The church stands as an excellent and late local example of the Neoclassical architectural style applied to a religious building. Listed in the National Register October 8, 2024.
