Description and Narrative:
The McCormick County Office Building is significant at the local level under Government and Architecture with a period of significance of 1949 to 1973. Upon its 1949 construction and continuing for decades, the Office Building was an important multi-governmental hub of public services for local and country residents. Distinct among local institutional buildings for the array of programming it hosted, the McCormick County Office Building was a vital point of contact between government and the McCormick County public until the building’s closure in 2010. Architecturally, the building is one of the best extant local expressions of Modernism in McCormick. The austere design with an emphasis on horizontality differentiated the building from others in town and marked it as distinctly Modern. The building is L-shaped and steel-framed with masonry veneer and concrete parging located at the corner of East Augusta and South Pine streets in McCormick, South Carolina. The building was erected in 1949 and enlarged in 1952, with the addition utilizing the same Modern design as the original building. Two smaller red brick additions were made to the south of the 1952 addition, near the corner of South Pine and Clayton streets: a two-story addition built c. 1965 and a one-story library addition constructed in 1970. The north and west elevations of the 1949 and 1952 sections feature concrete parging along the foundation level to emphasize the building’s horizontal focus, while the south and east elevations are devoid of this feature. Because the property continued to hold significance under Government until its 2010 closure, the period of significance ends in 1973, or fifty years before the date of listing.
