Description and Narrative:
Constructed in 1921 outside Irmo, St. Michael's Evangelical Lutheran Church is locally significant under Architecture as an intact example of the work of local expert craftsman Willie E. Koon of Chapin. Koon was a master carpenter who drew plans for thrity-four South Carolina churches, including a number in the Midlands. Self-taught, Koon was a careful craftsman whose design signature was recognizable in insistence on such features as towers, Gothic windows, double and triple front gables, and heavy eaves. The Carpenter Gothic building built in 1921 is the third church to house the St. Michael's congregation, which organized in 1814. This property was originally determined eligible by the Keeper of the National Register in 1983 but not listed due to owner objection. The objection was officially removed in April 2023, and the property was listed in the National Register July 24, 2023.
