Built in 1768 by Thomas Savage, the house is a fine example of the double house, with two stories above a brick basement. Its original entrance was apparently on Church Street, since early records give such an address. The house was a long time residence of Col. William Washington, first cousin of Gen. George Washington, a most noble Revolutionary hero.
