Street Address:
17 Franklin Street

Date Surveyed:
circa 1972
Signficant Architectural Features:
Antebellum. Built by William A. Whitney in 1849 - 52, this house was built in the fashion of the day while retaining a strong classical expression and permitting the narrow single house plan to rule. The exterior of the house is accentuated with much brownstone trim, a popular building idea of the day. The dwelling is constructed of a high colored brick. The first and second story windows have the same dentil trim as the cornice and gable but the third story frame is capped by broad center blocks. Piazza windows reach from floor to cornice base. Perhaps the most notable feature of the house is the hand-painted ceiling in the first floor sitting room. The interior was originally handsomely stenciled through the third floor, and the present owner states that on humid days the stenciling can be seen through the layers of more recent wall coverings. A sealed room, probably a wine cellar, has been discovered in recent years.
