Double house;Ever since its construction, the house has been associated with persons prominent in Charleston and S.C. affairs. William Capers, the builder was the founder of the family which was to give S.C. three Episcopal Bishops, one of which was a distinguished Confederate general. The house again belonged to Jacob Motte, and his outspoken wife Rebecca Brewton Motte, the heroine of Fort Motte. Later the house passed into the hands of James Parsons, a member of the Continental Congress and a distinguished Revolutionary soldier. In more recent years the house was the home of Alice Rutledge Huger Smith, the renowned watercolorist. It is a very large house with a full basement and attic. A three-tiered piazza looks out onto a walled garden. The interior has much Adam embellishment.
