Description and Narrative:
The Clover Downtown Historic District represents an important collection of commercial buildings which have provided the business focus for the town since its beginnings in 1876. These buildings provide evidence of various periods of growth and development in the Town of Clover. There are 14 contributing and 4 non-contributing resources within the district. The district consists primarily of one to three-story masonry commercial buildings built between the mid-1880s and about 1935. The crossroads at Main Street and Kings Mountain-Bethel Streets has been the center of the community throughout its history. The town began as a station on the rail line extension north of York to North Carolina. The tracks reached the site of Clover by 1874, and a water tank was constructed at the site to provide water for the steam engines for the train. Tradition has that the town’s name came from a patch of clover that grew in the overflow from the water tower. Listed in the National Register July 8, 1999.
