Description and Narrative:
The People’s National Bank Building, ca. 1909-1910, is significant for its long association with the People’s National Bank, the premier banking institution in Rock Hill, as an office building for many of the city’s most prominent professional and white-collar business throughout much of the twentieth century, and as Rock Hill’s first modern office building, an excellent example of the commercial designs of the prolific Columbia, S.C. firm of Shand and Lafaye (later Lafaye and Lafaye). In 1906, the State of South Carolina chartered The Peoples Bank and Trust Company. In 1910, the bank moved into the newly completed Peoples National Bank Building. The bank was the largest bank in the Fifth Congressional District, weathered the Great Depression and for nearly twenty years was the only bank active in Rock Hill. The bank merged with Citizens and Southern Bank of South Carolina in 1964 and moved out of the building in 1972. The brick four-story building, plus basement, was the first in the city constructed as a speculative office building, the first with a passenger elevator, and the tallest commercial building in Rock Hill. Listed in the National Register March 25, 1999.
