Description and Narrative:
The Bellevue-Newman’s Field-Gracelynn Terrace Historic District (formerly the Bellevue Historic District) is significant for its high concentration of intact examples of early- and mid-twentieth century residential architecture and its development as an early downtown suburb. It is composed of several distinct but interrelated developments, which include E.B. Wallace’s c.1906-1910 section; the Bellevue area that was platted in 1912; Newman’s Field, platted in 1919; and the Gracelynn Terrace section that was platted in 1938. The district is an intact example of one of the earliest planned suburban residential neighborhoods in Columbia whose appearance has been largely unaltered by the passage of time. The district includes Folk Victorian, Craftsman, Colonial Revival, Tudor Revival, Minimal Traditional, and Ranch style homes built for a middle and upper-middle class White demographic, as well as garages, garage apartments, duplexes, and quadplexes. The district represents part of the city’s first suburban expansion and annexation of the early twentieth century, the downtown suburban boom period of the 1920s, the introduction of duplexes, quadplexes, and garage apartments to meet changing housing needs in the 1930s and early 1940s, and the final phase of downtown residential development after World War II.
