Description and Narrative:

The Japanese garden was designed by W. Fulmer Wells, Newberry native and architect. The garden is a small landscaped park which was privately developed in 1930 and donated to the city for public use in 1971. The garden contains a variety of indigenous and exotic flora in a landscaped setting accented by Japanese architectural elements which frame and overlook two small ponds. Egyptian lotus, Japanese iris, water lilies, crepe myrtle’s, dogwood, and cypress embellish the garden, which is entered by a corner stone gatehouse under a tiled roof. Concrete bridges, executed in a Japanese design, span the ponds. A Japanese tea house under a tiled roof and a torii also enhance the setting. The gardens are contained in a triangular parcel, bounded on the east by a residential area and on the west by commercial buildings. The gardens are a unique facet of the built environment of Newberry. Listed in the National Register November 26, 1980.
