Description and Narrative:
The Harrington Street Historic District represents a significant collection of architecturally important residences reflecting the periods of Newberry’s greatest economic prosperity. The collection of eleven residences date from ca. 1870 to ca. 1930. Architectural types include Victorian raised cottages, the Neo-Classical mansion, and various vernacular modes such as the shotgun and bungalow. Outstanding individual houses include the Maybin-Pool House at 1727 Harrington Street, on which “Cam” Davis worked, the Neo-Classical William Mayes House, and two of the city’s four remaining Victorian raised cottages. The district retains visual integrity from the early twentieth century, with unity preserved by the open wooded lots and by the relative absence of contemporary buildings.
