Description and Narrative:
The West College Avenue Historic District is significant for its association with the residential development of Hartsville from ca. 1890 to ca. 1930 and as a reflection of the architectural styles and influences of that period. The district is a collection of twenty-seven residences along West College Avenue in Hartsville. Twenty-two buildings contribute to the character of the historic district, while five buildings and two vacant lots do not contribute to the character of the district. The contributing properties represent a significant period of residential development in early twentieth century Hartsville and were constructed from ca. 1906 to ca.1930, with the majority constructed between 1910 and 1926. They illustrate a period of significant development which saw the town’s population increase more than five times its size at the turn of the twentieth century. The architecture reflects late nineteenth and early twentieth century movements such as Victorian, Queen Anne, Colonial Revival, and Bungalow. Listed in the National Register September 8, 1994.
