Description and Narrative:
The Arcade Hotel is significant as a key element in the development of Hartsville as a regional center for commerce and industry. Constructed in 1913 by the Hartsville Arcade Hotel Company after a design by English immigrant architect Ernest V. Richards of Bennettsville, the building itself is a relatively sophisticated example of small town hotels of the early twentieth century. The hotel is a three-story, brick, L-plan building with a one-story rear wing. Dominating the Fifth Street elevation is a rusticated first floor, which contains three shops and an entrance portico. The entrance portico has two paneled brick pillars on concrete bases and with corbeled caps of brick. These are matched by pilasters against the wall. Stuccoed brick stepped parapets arch between the pillars and support the built-up roof. Beneath this portico the entrance has a pair of original glazed doors under a leaded, stained glass transom. The upper two floors have a symmetrical arrangement of alternating single and double windows. A slightly projecting band of stretcher brick frames each window or pair of windows. Projecting sailor brick courses also divide the three floors, and a corbelled brick course divides the third level from the parapet. Listed in the National Register December 19, 1986.
