Description and Narrative:
The Cheraw Historic District was originally listed in 1974 with formally identified areas of significance in Aboriginal: Historic, Architecture, Commerce, Landscape Architecture, Political, Religion/Philosophy, Transportation, and Urban Planning, and a period of significance that roughly began in 1766 and ended in 1924. In 2023, an Additional Documentation was approved to offer a clearer and more comprehensive understanding of how this collection of resources represents the architectural, commercial, and social development of the town of Cheraw over some 250 years of history. The Cheraw Historic District now has a period of significance beginning in 1768, the date of the earliest extant resources, and continuing through 1970 to reflect the historical significance of mid-century resources that have aged into eligibility. The district is listed at the local level under Criterion A: Commerce, Criterion C: Architecture, and Criterion A: Ethnic Heritage – Black. It is also listed at the state level under Criterion C: Architecture during the specific period of 1768-1860, as an unusually intact collection of pre-Civil War resources in the state’s historical Backcountry region. All other criteria and areas of significance from the original nomination were insufficiently supported and subsequently dropped from the listing. Listed in the National Register November 20, 1974. Additional Documentation approved April 3, 2023.
