Description and Narrative:
Crawford’s Plantation House, c.1835-1840, is significant for its architecture. Its T-plan, nineteenth century detail, and setting are significant as a distinctive remnant of an antebellum Sea Island cotton plantation. The architecture shows the influence of the Greek Revival style on Lowcountry design. The plantation is associated with several families prominent in the economic and social history of Edisto Island, particularly the Mikell, Edings and Whaley families. Its ownership history typifies the complicated pattern found on the South Carolina Sea Islands of marriages and inheritance among generations of closely related families. The house is a two-and-one-half story, weatherboard clad, frame residence, which has a lateral, pedimented gable, V-crimped metal roof with a central front gable projection that rises almost to the height of the ridgeline. Two interior brick chimneys with rat tooth bands above a corbeled stucco band are at the rear slope of the roof, just below the ridgeline. The rear wings have pedimented lateral gable ends. One-story polygonal projections at the front bays of the side elevations were added ca. 1889-99. The façade porch is a twentieth century replacement of an earlier porch. The rear porch has been infilled. Listed in the National Register June 8, 1993.
