Description and Narrative:

This site is significant because of its potential to yield important information for historic and prehistoric studies. Because the site is well preserved, it has strong potential for providing cultural-historical information, information concerning prehistoric subsistence, settlement patterns of Woodland and Mississippian groups in the Coastal Plain, and economic patterns of early settlers during the historic period. The site is abundant in shell and other organic material that can be radiometrically dated, mainly important because there are few radiocarbon dates available for prehistoric complexes in South Carolina. Additionally, the presence of a postmold in one of the two testpits excavated indicates a strong potential for recovering features that would provide information on pre-historic and historic architecture. The number and size of houses could allow estimates of population sizes, and detailed comparisons of artifactual and other data could permit inferences concerning social status, kinship, and related patterns and their changes over time. Listed in the National Register February 1, 1980.
