Description and Narrative:

Judging from the size of the mound the Indian Hill Site probably served as a regional ceremonial center performing religious, social and economic functions. Religious activities were centered on or near the mound which served as the base for a temple or other special purpose structure. Broken pieces of pottery, shell, and occasional fragments of animal bone found in the adjacent fields indicate that the village was close to the mound. The village probably consisted of clusters of houses constructed of wattle and daub. The mound rises to a height of 13 feet, 2 inches with a basal diameter of 138 feet east-west and 129 feet north-south. The summit is circular, 62 feet across. Preliminary analysis of pottery from the adjacent village area indicates that the site had close cultural affinities with the Savannah II Phase from coastal Georgia, and suggests the site was inhabited between 900 and 1400 AD. Listed in the National Register March 22, 1974.
