Description and Narrative:
Allendale Chert Quarries Archaeological District consists of fourteen prehistoric sites located along the eastern edge of the Savannah River in Allendale County, South Carolina. The district occupies an area of about 1,500 acres with the quarries and sites related to the processing of chert located on the bank of the Savannah River at distances of up to one-and-a-half miles away from the river. Currently, the floodplains are in mature hardwoods and the uplands in planted pines. Considerable anthropologically relevant data are contained in the quarries, which can be used to test models of hunter-gatherer adaptations as viewed through technology and the cultural organization of technology. The fact that this chert was available in only a relatively small locality in South Carolina provides good analytical closure on the geographic study of its utilization. Listed in the National Register September 28, 1985.
