Signficant Architectural Features:
2 story clapboard house, irregular in plan, with bell-cast hip and gable roof. 3 large Interior chimneys can be seen from Midway St. Windows are double hung sash. 1/1. Front: asymmetrical, main entrance with single leaf door containing a large elliptical window, rectangular transom and sidelights is on left side of front elevation, and, to the right of this doorway is a single window; a 1 story porch with wrought iron supports extends across the front facade; on the 2nd story, above the front door, is a window with 4-pane transom where a doorway used to be; this window is flanked on the left by a small elliptical window, and on the right by 2 sash windows; the front slope of the roof is broken by a single-hipped dormer which contains a window with intersecting tracery. Both E. and W. sides feature 2 story projecting gabled pavillions. Interior: central entry and stair hall opens onto the principal rooms. OUTBUILDINGS: garage
Alterations:
altered - has undergone extensive exterior renovations on the front. Until about the 1960s porte cochere extended from the porch on the right side and a one story porch with Ionic columns extended across the front and left sides. The open upstairs porches were enclosed by a balustrade. Louvered shutters were once attached to the windows.
Historical Information:
Built by Clara Hays Spann (Mrs. J. Albert) after purchasing the property in 1915. John Albert Spann operated a general store, a bakery, and a sawmill in Bamberg. He was also a cotton buyer and a farmer, owning a large plantation nearby.
