Historical Information:
The exact date of construction of the Murdauqh-Padqett house is unknown. The lot was a part of a 10 acre tract purchased in 1883 by E.R. Hays from W.C. Broadwater. In 1892, Hays sold J. A. Byrd 5 acres of the tract, and in 1897, Byrd sold h of it to H. J. Brabham, who then sold it to his son Otis. In a booklet published in 1951 by Otis Brabham (born 1872), he states that he and his family lived in the house and that his two sons were born there. Brabham sold the property in 1906 to J. A. Murdaugh who resided there with his wife ("Miss Mamie"), a Bamberg schoolteacher for many years. After her husband's death, Mrs. Murdaugh invited George Calvin & Rebecca Padgett to live in the home with her. Padgett came to Bamberg in 1912, and in 1919 he and Henry Kearse opened a men's store under the name of Kearse and Padgett, which they ran until they died.
