Historical Information:
Around the mid-1800's, the Southbound Railroad Co. (later-the Sea-board Airline Railroad) obtained a north-south right-of-way through the property of Mrs. Ann Williams Myrick and Mr. Sam Ulmer in the vicinity of Bufords Bridge. At the time, there were several families living in the area, including: Boyntons,Priesters, Sanders, Brants, Myricks, Williams, etc. While the railroad was being built, a community called Meyer began to develop. Stores were established and planned at Meyer, and it appeared that it was to become a flourishing town. However, the Railroad Co. decided to build a depot about a mile north of the community on land donated by Mrs. Ann W. Myrick, and eventually Meyer disappeared. Business began to be built along the railroad tracks around the depot, and a P.0, was added. Blocks and streets were laid out on the land of Mr. Sam Ulmer, and, on August 7, 1891, the town, named "Ulmer", received its charter. Originally there was a north-south road through Ulmer known as the "Sisters Ferry Road", which was replaced in 1922 by a wider clay road. In 1936, this road was re-routed through the town and paved. Initially called No. 5, this road later became designated U.S. 321. After Ulmer received its charter, a 2-story frame school building was built in the town on land provided by Sam Ulmer; in 1917, a 2-story brick school (demolished - 1977) was constructed as a replacement. At one time, Ulmer had at least 6 general merchandise and grocery stores, 2 millinery stores and cloth shops, a grist mill, blacksmith shop, barber shop, and cotton gin. Fires and the depression caused the decline of the town. It was eventually left with one store, which relocated along the highway. Prominent Ulmer citizens have included: Dr. J. J. Craddock, Dr. Mack Lewis, Dr. A. J. Harter, Mr. Jones M. Williams (a state senator), Mr. W. E. Myrick (state senator), Mr. 0. D. A. Wilson (S. C. House, ca. 1910-14), Mr. John McMillan (S. C. House, State Public Service Commission, etc.), James B. Brandt, B. C. Myrick (Mayor for many years), etc.
