2 story frame residence on hill overlooking rd, rectangular w/1 story shed addn to rear that extends to 1 story rectnglr outbldg; 5 bays wide(1st & 2nd: W-W-E-W-W ),4 bays deep(lst & 2nd: W-W-W-W); hipped patterned metal roof w/central deck surrounded by balcony; 4 ext. brick chimneys v/corbelled caps; 2 story monumental pedimented portico w/fluted columns along the 3 central bays of facade; boxed cornice, dentil molding, plain board frieze; decorative corner boards; 1/1 windows, central entrance at 2nd level of facade has small projecting balcony; 1st level central entrance has fanlight & sidelights; wood blinds; wood novelty siding; brick fndtn; rear flanker is basically square w/hipped corrugated metal roof; 6/6 windows; also located on property are several barns, sheds & garages; small 1 story rectangular, frame service bldg approx. 45 yds to N of house, 3 bays wide (W-E-W), 1 bay deep; side gable "V“ crimped metal roof; 1 story corrugated metal shed porch along front w/simple wood wood posts; board & batten siding; small log outbuilding 25 to 30 yds W of the house OUTBUILDINGS: Contributory barns & sheds (tenant shack, shed, hay barn, tool shed, open equipment shed, carport)
Historical Information:
Owner says originally constructed by Col. Harry Hammond (son of Gov. J. H. Hammond), Kathwood Manufacturing Company, ca. 1898; owned by the Hammond Family for many years; later owned by Christopher Cashel Hammond; Kathwood Company operated a cottonseed oil mill near Kathwood Plantation, present house is said to have replaced an older bachelor's quarters for the company; a rail stop along the Western Carolina RR is marked as "Kathwood" near this location on the 1920s USGS topo map of the area
