MacDowell quotes a November 1923 article: "The Sand Bar Ferry Bridge, when completed, will be the longest, the highest and the heaviest bridge in the two states of Georgia and South Carolina. It will be 1,500 feet in length and the floor will be 72 feet above the high water mark of the turbid Savannah. The cost of the structure, complete, will ba slightly more that $350,000. The bridge will consist of two long concrete approaches, extending to the water's edge, then five steel spans, stretching between the concrete sections of the bridge."; A. J.
