Historical Information:
Along this row in 1889 were a variety of one and two story commercial buildings all of which have been replaced over time by 1899 there were two small one story shops at this site. By 1904 a double two story store was at this site half as deep as the present 1building and by 1909 a two story building with this footprint was occupied by a restaurant and a tailor. The tailor remained in the east side of the building until at least 1918 with the restaurant to the west. The building is said to have been the location of Stoney sTailoring Shop. Edward Stoney a young black freedman who moved to Aiken ca 1855 was a tailor, his relatives later operated Jackson sFuneral Horne (now Jackson Brooks owned by a great grandson). This building is also remembered as havin been used by Jackson sFuneral Home although that usage is not shown on Sanborn maps. Aiken Standard Sesquicentennial Edition puts the tailor shop to the north of this site, at the corner of Alley and Bee Lane Stoney became Chief County Commissioner of the newly-created Aiken County in 1871; at the end of Reconstruction he returned to the successful business of tailor to the winter colony.
