Historical Information:
This block, opposite the Southern Railway passenger depot, was redeveloped after the ca. 1896 burning of the Park Avenue Hotel. A store is first shown on this site on 1909 maps, operated as an upholsterer's shop which remained as late as 1918. By 1925 two stores shared the space, and in 1935 a vacant auto repair shop is_x000D_ shown here. The lumber repair business has expanded east toward the railroad from the Fairfield Street side of the block, where it shared space with a harness and buggy shop, to occupy former site of Park Avenue Hotel's two-story servants' quarters; a large livery barn, and cotton warehouses.
