Historical Information:
Capt. O. P. Mills organized Mills Manufacturing Company in 1894 and built Mills Mill, a major industrial complex at edge of the city. The mill opened with 5000 spindles but was enlarged to 27,000 spindles by 1903. The Mills Mill complex also included a mill village, YMCA, two churches, and public library. J. E. Sirrine designed the company store. Mills Mill employed 500 people and operated (under later owners) until 1979.
