Built shortly before 1783, supposedly by Peter Boquet, the house later came into the possession of Gov. John Rutledge Mathews. An unusual feature of the property is the formal garden laid out in the back of the house which was believed to be done by Boquet, since he was well known for his interest in Botany. It is apparent form the detailed use of the Adam style that the interior of the house was remodeled around 1800 when that airy, delicate style came to the city.
