Historical Information:
Located on lands once part of the Magnolia Umbra Plantation, this cemetery was laid out as Charleston's city church burying yards became overcrowded. Its style imitates Mount Auburn Cemetery in Boston and Greenwood Cemetery in New York. Some of the people buried in the cemetery include Thomas Bennett (SC Governor 1820-1822, R. Barnwell Rhett (US Congressman and Senator), author William Gilmore Simms, and Captain Horace Hunley and his crew from the submarine that bears his name.
