Signficant Architectural Features:
Built by Thomas Bennett, the architect, lumberman, mill-owner, and master builder, the entrance story is reached by a double flight of steep marble steps. The house has been altered greatly in the 1840's or 1850's yet much of the original interior still remains. The original mantels were replaced by ones of the classical expression, and the remaining plaster work seems to date from the same period. In the stairwell there survives--despite addition of stained glass--a grand Palladian window of early 19th century design with reeded half columns and the delicate dentil trim. The finest detail work in the house may be found in the second story westward drawing room. With the exception of an added bath, it remains as it was created 160 years ago.
