Signficant Architectural Features:
Built by Jonah M. Venning, the house is in the Greek Revival style, a very modern and unusual building mode for this period in Charleston's history. The builder chose the single house plan but faced the house to the street instead of running it lengthwise. A large 2-tiered piazza runs across the front of the house with unfluted Doric columns and balustrades. Large full windows and doors with plain treatment are characteristic of the house as are the transoms and sidelights of the entrances on both piazza levels. The marble steps leading up to the first tier of the piazza were added later.
