The interior has parquet floors and there are eight marble mantels. The ironwork displays the palmetto tree and the Federal eagle, a testimony to John Rutledge, the man the house was built to accomodate. John Rutledge served his native state as President of the Republic of S.C., governor of the state; associate justice and briefly chief justice of the Supreme Court of the U.S.; chief justice of S.C.; and congressman. The house sits three full stories upon a high basement with a large pediment at the roof level. It is a double house with numerous outbuildings to the rear. The building is cornered with quoins.
